Situated between St. Louis and Memphis, Poplar Bluff was one of the earliest permanent settlements in the county along the Natchitoches Trail. When Butler County was officially organized in 1849, Poplar Bluff quickly became its center of population.

There are 134 miles of clean, clear rivers for water sports within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and Ozark Ridge Golf Course is an 18-hole, championship course open to the public.
